Measurable Assessment in Recreation
for Resident-Centered Care
(MARRCC)
Initial
Assessment
Using the MARRCC can assist
recreation professionals in making a transition from
the traditional approach to recreation programming in LTC (i.e.
long standing with past success, open to all, and primarily
suited to residents with higher cognitive functioning levels)
to a resident-centered approach. A resident-centered approach
ensures that the unique and specialized needs of the cognitively
impaired and physically frail residents are met. A critical
component of the transition to a resident-centered approach is
the ability to accurately assess residents' capabilities and
needs. The MARRCC enables the recreation professional to measure
the resident's functioning level in four domains as they relate
to recreation.
Purpose
- Enable the recreation professional to place residents into
appropriate recreation programs and/or groups based on their
individual functioning levels within each domain.
- Enable the recreation professional to gather statistical
information about the client population he serves, specifically
the percentage of residents who fall into high, moderate, and
low functioning levels within each domain.
- Acquire information about residents' past and present
leisure attitudes, interests, and participation patterns.
- Assist the recreation professional in providing opportunities
for the resident to continue to participate in recreation
activities that he enjoyed prior to placement in a LTC facility.
- Assist the recreation professional in developing and writing
appropriate goals and interventions for each resident.
- Enable the resident to continue to have choice, control, and,
ultimately, empowerment in their leisure lifestyle.
When to Administer
The MARRCC-Initial Assessment should be initiated within seven
days of the resident's admission and completed within 14 days
of admission (per facility policy and state requirements).
Time Needed to Administer
Approximately 45 minutes.
